When the bushings and yokes get worn the shift gates get out of alignment,,this will show up like yours is acting,,pull the cowl off and get a hold on the outer quadrant and shake it around, then pull the shifter down to the 5th gear spot and rock the lever left and right ,,as you look into the center you will see the "Latch" cam back and forth, the purpose of the "latch" is to hold one quadrant in place while the other seeks the gear you after..and the actual pivot pin can work loose and wallow the housing out too, this creates a new problem. But removing the shifter and replacing "ALL" the bushings and nylon shims, as well as the yokes and pins ,and of course the center pivot it's self (you can built the shift lever up with weld and grind it back to shape to save some $$),all this will help tighten things up good,,another good idea is to squirt a shot oil down in there every now and then...I'll post a shifter re-build parts list after bit,,most younger parts guys don't know what is needed,,some days I am jealous of their youth,,,but most days I appreciate our experience..
