Steaming oil is probably caused by the hyd valve on log splitter. The valve is more than likely open-center which will cause oil to heat.
Not moving forward is a leaking seal/gasket from over-heating hyd oil. 1st thing to do is check trans pump psi which should be around 150-170 psi.
