Of course it's going to short,arc and blow fire when you connect that brown to chassis. That brown wire at the starter/regulator has 12V+ to chassis.
The only place another totally, completely and independent wire which also happens to be brown. It's at the batteries to tie the mid point to chassis.
The entire 24V system floats totally and completely 100% free from tractor chassis. The generator, regulator and starter do not need or use any reference to chassis. They would function normally if bolted to a wooden plank.
