I tried taking off the same piece on my 44. Wouldn't budge. I would just change the whole axle.
If your wheels are set at 76" on center, and then 76-14=62 between wheels, which means the center of the tractor is at 31" from the furrow wall. The center of the draft of the plow should be around 15" from the furrow wall, so you have 16" to divide between the plow and tractor. You don't need to move the plow hitch as much as what's pictured, you need to slide the tractor drawbar over some also. That's not unreasonable, you can leave the wheels where they're at.
I guess I don't understand your statement about plow hitches. Your 44 hitch will look different because it's a hydraulic lift plow.
