Well its totaly on the cheap, I rethought the idea and You can do it with out hydrolics, A hand winch will work well. find your self an old scaper blade or some sort of already made 3pth frame, Get about 8 feet of 2-3 inch pipe, strong pipe. Cut in half and weld it verticlay to the frame. space them about 2 feet apart. At the top weld a thick bar across the top, make sure the tops are even. Get two collars that will fit over your pipe, Put one on each pipe, Weld a thick bar to connect the 2 to form one solid unit that will slide up and down the pipe. MAke a wedge, (use your imagination) attach the wedge to solid cross piece that slides up and down the pipes, put some weight into this, If you do it right it can double as a post pounder. Now weld a point onto your wedge frame that you can attach cable to, put a pulley ontop of the cross piece thats ontop of your two upright pipe's. Next bolt or weld a hand winch onto your 3pht frame. Attach cables. Are we getting the idea so far??? crank the winch, your wedge goes up only problem is that unless you have tree's like arms you won't be able to hold it up there for ever. So you need a hook or latch of some sort to hold up your wedge. Again use your imagination. Here's how it works, go up to your pile of uncut wood, put a heavy splitting block under where the wedge will fall, put your block of firewood on top on that. Play with the 3pht till you get to the right working height, winch your wedge up, latch it so it doesn't fall. Then when ready un latch it, best way is to have a long flat swinging bar with notch cut in it, it is atachted to and swings from the very top of cross piece on up right pipes. have a bold welded to the wedge, lift up wedge and let it hook onto notch of the flat bar. When ready to split, WHeN ALL HANDS ARE CLEAR. Pull the flat bar to release the wedge. The weight of the wedge forces it down fast upon the wood and splits it, simple gravity. Confused???, I have an awsome way to make it motorized. If ya's likes.
