I've been splitting wood by hand for a long time, and while poplar wouldn't be my first choice for firewood, if you need to split it, the winter time when it is wet seems to be the best. If you let it dry out, it gets "stringy", and it splits awful. I find it splits so easy when it's wet and frozen, that I pile most of my firewood up in the barn, and split it when the temp is about 20 degrees. The stuff comes apart prety easily with just an axe. Same with about every other kind of wood. It also keeps you in shape in the winter, and it seems everytime I aim to get at it in the summer, it's soon Xmas, and it's still looking at me. Take Care Steve
