Mike - I have personally fed many heifers a magnet. All of the dairy operations use them here in Michigan. If the wire and other metal from feed procesing machinery passes the first stomach, it can kill them. This is refered to as "hardware disease". It's cheap insurance. The old magnets were solid - the new ones use several magnets seperated by 1/4" plastic, on a plastic rod - this gives more north and south poles, and attracts more hardware. Visit your local dairy farmer, and he might show you one. We bought them by the box full.
