There are 2 pins with notches in them coming out of the transmission.
One pin is for 1st and 3rd. When the cable bushing is in that notch and the pin is in, you are in either 1st or 3rd and when the pin out you are in the other of those two gears.
The cable then has to go to the other pin notch to shift to second.
Your pattern on your lever is something like this.

As you see 1st and 3rd line up. when the lever moves across to go into 2nd is when the cable has to drop to the other pin. I use to get my 1440 into second by slamming the lever back and forth through neutral on the dotted line several times before trying to go into 2nd.
I would go take pictures but I no longer have the 1440 and the 2366 is different. 2nd and 3rd line up on the 2366.
