you need to find a shop that wants your business, my neighbor has good reliable j/d that needed a part, dealer who sold it to him spent most of the visit trying to sell him a new mower, we went elsewhere you very likely have either a briggs or tecumseh motor on there, get model/serial munber off the shroud and start haunting the briggs/tecumseh dealers if its tecumseh, the magneto coil has a heavy wire clip holding it in place, it slides off and you slde a new coil on, swap one off an old working motor to test it, not so sure about briggs
