When I finish mowing, I scrape out everything I can reach with a long handled scraper, then hose it off with the blades turning. The deck gets taken off every 4th or 5th mowing for a more thorough cleaning and touching up of the blades. I prefer to sharpen them with a large flat file as it keeps the edge nice and straight. If there is stone damage and I have to grind, I still finish with the flat file. A fairly steep angle on the cutting edge will stay sharp longer and will not be as prone to damage. A clean mower deck with sharp blades is a pleasure to work with. Yes, your blades need replacing: you can cut back only about so far; some blades have a small hole behind the cutting edge which, when reached by sharpening, indicates it's time to replace blade. Balancing the blades after sharpening will save "wear & tear" on the bearings.
