I recommend a Kohler engine. Almost anything manufactured in that time period was crap i.e. Ford and Chevy cars, small applincnces etc. Everyone was trying to save money, and it didn’t pay off.
The Kohler Magnum is a clone to the KT series. I’m sure you could find a M20 if you looked hard enough. That’s a motor that just bolts up. You can’t beat that. That way you don’t have to deal with taking 3” out of the frame and having to make a sub-frame because now it can’t take the weight of the new motor. Then the deck won’t fit because of the sub frame.
I have a 317 with a fresh M18S for about $1700.00 less then a repower motor. I looked all around town and found 3 M18S for “cheap” prices. Rebuilt it and now I have an awesome mower, tiller, and dirt pusher.
