Marcia, If the new and used ones you are looking at are the same, buy the new one. In genreal now days, most all mowers from Sears, Walmart and the general retailers are made buy the same companys. MTD is probably the main manufacturer. When you look at a mower find the ID tag. It is usually under the seat. In most cases it will give the name of the manufacturer. Manufacturers also make different product lines. For example, MTD (Modern Tool & Die)makes mowers for retailers such as Walmart, Kmart etc and they also manufacture the Cub Cadet. But the Cub Cadet, as the price would indicate, is not in the same class as the Walmart. MTD also makes YardMan. The components of different mowers are made by the the same manufacturers. Engines are generally Briggs & Straton, Tecumseh or Kohler and Onan on the bigger units. Most transmissions are made by Peerless/Tecumseh. There are Riders, Lawn Tractors and Garden Tractors. Riders, often refered to as rear engine models, are just that mowers you ride on. These are usually smaller cuts (30-32"). Some people get these for small yards where they have to get it through a narrow gate. Lawn Tractors can be used for mowing and accessories pulled behind such as a fertilizer spreader. Garden Tractors are used for mowing and will utilize attachments which include ground engegement (Plows & cultivators). The obvious visual difference between the Lawn Tractor and the Garden Tractor is the size of the rear tires. The Garden Tractor rear tires will usually have a 12" rim. From what you are saying, a Riding Mower or Lawn Tractor in the $800 range would be about right. One choice you do need to make will be the type of transmission. Gear drive or Hydrostat drive. I perfer the hydrostat especially if you have to go from forward to reverse to jockey around things. Service. Find out where you can get warranty and repair service. If you have any questions e-mail me. Kent
