Vince, the guy's 42 years old, has had 3 back surgeries and needs another. He's riding the Kubota to all 48 lower states to collect money for the surgery. Local dealer did free tune-up, oil change, and gave the guy $100 toward his surgery. His son is following him in a chase truck. News story says neither he nor his son has had to pay for a meal or a motel room yet. Guy's name is Gary Hatter, he's ridden over 2,000 miles and been out 43 days. He's from Champaign, Ill. He said in story he'd never heard of Alvin Straight, of "The Straight Story" movie fame, and the trip Straight made...until a reporter from The Washington Post mentioned it. Straight's trip, by the way, was 240 miles long. The movie is great, too. The Kubota rider says the most memorable experience he's had was going through inner New York city, where kids had NEVER SEEN a lawn and garden tractor! Anyhow, hats off to Gary, who's still facing the desert states and rode through here in 99-degree heat. All he's got is a shade umbrella to sit under. He's gonna be in the "Guiness Book of World Records" for sure!
