I'm partial to the IH-made Cub Cadets (pre-1982), and there are many models you can buy within your budget that have been restored to brand-new condition. I particularly like the 1960s-era models, (especially the 71-102-122-123 series) on which virtually everything is metal, NOT plastic. They are extremely durable, and parts are readily available for them from current Cub manufacturer MTD or via the used market. That said, there are also great John Deere and Simplicity units out there, too. Any of these 3 brands will "outlive" you if you buy a reconditioned unit from a reputable source, or will provide a great restoration hobby for you!
