if your tractor doesn"t have a "draft tube" to ventilate the crankcase, the breather cap will have some "smoke coming fromm it for awhile after a cold start up. There"s condensate in the oil that will evaporate as the crankcase oil heats up and then just vaious vapors from the oil. The rings are not at there operating temperture nor are the cylinders so there is some blow by also. When the engine is at operating temprature and the oil has hit it"s steady state temperature most of what you will see come out the breather is blow by caused by worn rings. If your exhaust smokes at idle and not at high rev"s under load, then the valve guides and seals are worn. If the exhausts smokes under load then it"s the oil control rings that are worn. My guess from your description("...going from 3rd to 4th gear the tractor will belch out a plum of smoke and then clear up.") is yo when you step on the clutch to shift, the manifold vacuum increases and the pulls oil past the guides ands seals, whic are worn" into the ylinder and then you see smoke. As the vacuum decreases when picking up load(the throttle opens) the problem goes away. I think you might be looking at some cylinder head work in the future. If your plugs aren"t fouling and the oil consumption isn"t excessive, then I wouldn"t worry about it.
