You are correct about the aftermarket drums. They are cast iron and are prone to cracking.
Used drums may be no better than the one(s) that you now have.
Turning your drum(s) MAY help the condition but WILL introduce a new and more problematical failure to hold condition unless you can find someone to cam grind your shoes to fit the turned drums. This is very unlikely as this is no longer legal to do on passenger car drums (thanks, feds) and most (all?) shops have disposed of their shoe arching tool(s).
