I have taken a closer look at the neck and it looks like it is as you say.. There is a small lip of metal that fits inside the neck where it meets the tank and it looks like its soldered in there. Doesn't look to difficult. I would be tempted to try this myself with a torch, but I'm a bit cautious about blowing up.
