It takes around 10 days for some checks to clear most banks. If you have an account in good standing with a bank, they will go ahead and cash the check, but that in no way means that the check is legitimate. In the event that the check is no good, the bank simply comes back and takes the money out of your account. All you have to do to filter the scammers is tell them you will send them them their "over payment" only after their check clears your bank. You will never hear from them again.
