My take on it, having done a number of criminal investigations over the years, is that it is entirely possible YOU don't know all the facts of the case. It is quite likley that the case agent who sent you this inquiry has a better grasp of what should or should not be released as it my compromise an ongoing investigation in ways of which you do not realize. Taking it upon yourself to ascribe another meaning to the phrase "This request should remain confidential, as the Subject has been known to frequent web forums, such as those found on eBay and Yesterday's Tractor" was irresponsible. IF you were genuinely concerned with the suspect being successfully prosecuted, you would have complied with the obvious meaning of the phrase. Generally speaking, it is better to not tip your hand to someone that they are being scrutinized until you have collected adequate evidence to approach them from a strong position. You may have just allowed the suspect to become aware of the level of scrutiny he is under, and dispose of or destroy important evidence, possibly even jeopardizing YOUR chance for compensation if you were victimized. Simply brilliant.
