People can be sued for telling lies that cause damage to the reputation of another. In the U.S.A. you have the legal right to tell the truth. Always tell the whole truth, not the partial truth, in a non-malicious way. There are 3 things that must be met to fit libel/defamation. 1. the statement was false. 2. the statement was damaging. 3. the statement was made with the intention of harming. I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. The law looks fairly straight forward to me, and favors the truth. From what I have read, the bottom line is if it went to court the person accusing you of libel would need tangible proof of sufficient monetary damage (not theoretical) and you would need proof backing up your statements made against them. We should not be afraid to tell the truth. Especially if it is said with the intention to protect others. Just make sure you can back up your story.
