The piece being described should have a small male end threaded into the pump, and typically a larger female end that the return line attaches to. Once you pull it out of the pump turn it upside down and look at the end of the small male part. When you do that you ought to be able to see a small ring pressed into the end of the fitting holding the ball and spring in place. To get it out come in from the female side with a small diameter pin punch to knock everything out the male end.
