Well, got back into the d4d today. First I got it started and cracked the fuel line to #3 to see if the smoke cleared. Really couldn't tell if there was a difference. Then I took the valve cover off and fired it up. Nothing there that would indicate a valve guide. So, shut it back down put everthing back together and took the fuel line off #3 cylinder and set it up so the fuel line would pump into a jug. Definately pumping fuel, the smoke cleared, and engine sounds smoother. After talking with the local engine shop,the next test is going to be pulling #3 injector, loosening rockers on#3 cylinder so the valves stay closed, and apply air pressure with a air compressor to see if I have a broken valve or just a worn cylinder or bad rings. I'm guessing it needs an overhaul because the hour meter is reading almost 11,000 hrs. and not sure if anything has ever been done to this engine before. Now the father-in-law wants to sell it.
