Does anyone have any experience growing the Giant Pumpkins? The reason I ask is that the other morning on one of the nation news shows they had a story about a grandfather and grandson that raised the pumpkins for competition. The story ended up with the reporter stating to "not even think about making a pie out of one of these pumpkins...too many chemicals are used to grow them". Is that a true statment or just another case of the news media not telling the whole truth? Just curious, didn't sound like very good PR for the giant pumpkin growers! WB. |

| It is possible , some of the growers use products not listed for use on pumpkin crops for example ,Captan as an anti-fugicide ....also the water content of the big ones is to high for using in cooking and lower in sugars / taste do not help either ... Bill G. |

| | The statement as you put it is probably a case of the media getting a little bit of information, drawing their own conclusions and running off at the mouth. A lot of giant pumpkin growers do inject stuff into their pumpkins, some things natural and some that could be called 'chemical'. That aside, the genetics that they use are not only designed for maximum size (as opposed to taste) but I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) must are not actually pumpkins but a kind of squash. I've grown some big ones in the past (3' diameter) and the two things I did was to pick off all but one flower per vine and feed them like crazy. I used "chemical" fertilizer but it really doesn't matter if you use miricle gro type or a pile of manure, but give them lots of feed. I also watered alot, but I was on sand at that time so over watering wasn't an issue. Never got into that injection nonsence. My $.02 Chuck |

| | I"ll bet there are some strange cocktails being fed to those monsters. I"ve heard they inject milk into the vines too. Regardless, I don"t believe that sort of pumpkin would be good for pie (too coarse). I grow 100 pounders and eat the seeds but I only fertilize with horse apples and leaf mulch. Landlord7012 |
