I"ve asked this on another forum with mixed results so I"ll ask it here. I"m looking for enough Bloody Butcher corn seed to plant around five acres. What I don"t want to do is pay $5 for 50 seeds. So, if any of you good folks know where I can get around 10 or 20 pounds I"d appreciate the information. Yeah, I know 10 or 20 pounds won"t plant five acres but it would allow my old planter to function properly. I"m located in Arkansas if it matters.

| I bought my wapsie valley from openpollinated.com last year. I grew from saved seed this year for the first time. We picked it friday and put it in the crib. I took a sample to the elevator and the moisture was 18.3% and the test weight was 60.7 . I am getting a sample ready to send out for protien test.

| Shumway has Reids yellow dent for 89 bucks for a 50 pound bag.Shipping will cost but after growing 1 bag you will have all the seed you need free and no shipping rip off.I grew a few rows of Reids for my cattle for many years.Got my starter seed from Landreth Seed Co.Sweet corn seed was a buck a pound when I started gardening now I see prices at 40 bucks.I see seed potatoes selling for 90 cents a pound here.I grew my potatoes from saved seed this year.I have grown corn from saved hybrid seed, got a nice crop.

Because my cattle eat it better and grow faster. The protien content is also higher any time I have had it tested.

Well I do for the fact that the way this country is headed (not political please) I feel a real downturn and hyper inflation coming on. Now Reids yellow will produce 120bpa in a good year and you can save your seed for the next year . Now if hyper inflation hits what do you think your price per bag of that fancy gmo corn with cost you? what do you pay now? I raise my corn to feed my sheep, hogs and chickens........and sell cornmeal to others..........some people dont want that GMO stuff and I am one of them. I am planning on building my own Ethanol production unit so I will be totally self sufficient as my older tractors can run on pure ethanol.........besides it is good to drink too.......LOL.
That is why I plant open pollinated corn. To each his own I guess!

| Who said I plant all gmo corn? Some good conventional corns can be bought for $120/140 per bag. I figure with $7 corn it's basic economics.I plant some conventional hybrid corn so if I plant conventional corn and you plant op corn our weed controll options are going to be similar plus I have a variety that has been bred for yield, standability, drought tolerance, ect. not some corn they planted during the civil war! I don't know what the max yield potential for your area is but I wouldn't want to be limited by a variety that can produce 120 bpa under ideal conditions. If it were that good farmers around here wouldn't have switched to hybrid corn 60 years ago.

| We plant open pollinated corn so that we can selectively save our own seed. We save for the traits we wish, such as earlier, bigger, better insect resistance, and each year it gets better and better. It becomes accustomed to your location and adapts better. Also it is getting harder and harder to find seed commercially that isn't contaminated with GMO's. A very good reason to save your own seed. Hybrids will usually only perform well for one year. so you can't save seed.

| I have a friend that raises bloody butcher and grinds it into cornmeal with a water powered mill that was built in the 1800's. The seed has been in his family for generations. I will talk to him today.

| Do a search on open pollinated seed corn.Saw op corn at 35 bucks a bushel.Leonard Borries has been selling op corn for many years.

| Talked to my friend this morning. He told me that the drought this year basically wiped his crop out. What the dry weather didn't get the deer did. For some reason they love it.He said he really didn't have any extra to let go at this time. He said there were places that sold the seed but he had seen it sell for as high as $40.00 per pound. Sorry, I couldn't help. Maybe next year.

| Google "open pollinated corn seed" and there will be several sites that sell BBR corn.........some sell it in 50 pound bags too. Im going to try Reids Yellow this next year.

| I just did as you suggested, I went back 10 pages. Found NOBODY selling BB corn in 50lb bags.
