I have an opportunity to purchase (at a great price, some ear corn, about 500 bu., been stored in a corn crib for 2 years. Very dry, but I don't have an exact number as to an exact moisture percentage. I don't have a crib to store it in, but I do have a 1500 bu. grain bin, no fans, solid cement floor. Can I store this ear corn in this bin? Im located in central MNI will be using this corn to feed to my beef steers. I would like to run it through a grinder/mixer with a coarse screen to give it just a crack. I would add a protein pellet and some molasses and then store it in a feed bin. How long would it store once cracked and mixed? I'm currently only feeding about a bushel per day, I would like to buy more animals but am struggling to decide if now is a good time to buy or not. Weird cattle market. Many guys telling me that they think prices will fall due to high feed costs. Thanks for any help that you maybe able to offer |

| | That corn should be dry enough to keep fine in the closed bin. Be careful tho if you like ear corn, fresh from the field will _not_ keep in a closed bin, it would need air curculation like a crib would offer. With the ear corn so dry, it will want to shell off the cob pretty easily, as you dump into your wagons, and again as you dump into the bin, you will end up with a lot of shell corn on the bottom, and a lot of 1/2 full cobs on top. Might want to plan your griniding to balance that you, so you get the shelled stuff mixed with the cobby stuff as you grind. I often found my ground feed started going off a bit after 2 weeks. A month might work and esp in winter when it's cold up here should be fine, but I'd watch that, after 2 weeks keep an eye on things. --->Paul |

| | I think the corn will be fine in your bin this winter. If you use it down some by summer that is a plus too. I wouldn't be real worried about it keeping through the summer. Grinding a month's supply at a time should be fine. |
