AdamOH 08-22-2012 09:31:04 140.228.158.6 Report to Moderator	Hello, This fall we're planning on baling several hundred small sqaure bales of corn stalks. I was wondering if anyone had tried this with much sucess? We're planning on baling behind a New Holland twin rotor combine. Going to run the brush hog down the center with the most leaves, then rake with a 5 bar rake. With the intentions of leaving the large stalks that haven't been run through the combine? Running mostly the leaves and not the stalks through the baler should lower the wear from the stalks? Any tips of suggestions? Thanks [Reply]   [No Email]

I've used a 14T, and IH 46 and several different New Hollands, they all worked fine with no excessive wear on the machine. I use a stalk chopper and chop the entire field, then rake with a four bar rake. I have used a bush hog in a pinch, worked fine. You can't run the chopper across the field in road gear, slow it down to chop the stalks up finer and you should have no problems. [Reply]  [No Email]
Rdandersom 08-26-2012 04:11:07 64.235.100.62 Report to Moderator	Re: Baling Corn Stalks in Small Squares in reply to AdamOH, 08-22-2012 09:31:04   I did this a few years ago.With the New Idea picker we shredded in the spring and baled with a 269 New holland.I have used a wheel rake in the spring after a Case Ih combine had harvested the fall before.I would be afraid that your bar rake will get beat up.In Ontario stalks rarely get dry enough to bale in the fall. You just set it and drove down two rows of corn stalks, and it chopped the stalk and threw it into the feeder chamber. Worked pretty good and made some nice, clean stalk balage. [Reply]  [No Email]

Crab grass had grown up in the corn, grass was too late to hurt yield. I mowed with a haybine. Grass and cornstalks made good hay. The few ears of corn the combine missed helpwd the hay too.
