Have about 4 acres of corn left on ground that's too wet.Don't have a snapper machine within 40 miles of here, don't have a processor on the chopper and no corn head on a grain combine within 60 miles of here either. Was planning to cut it when the ground freezes hard enough to not get stuck, but was wondering if there will be any feed value in non-processed corn left this late,or if we would be further ahead to just blow it on the ground as we chop it?Could end up re-planting in the process lol.If we do chop and pile it,was thinking on feeding it to dry dairy cows. Thanks for any advice.pd

if you want to harvest it as grain, you could try out the grain head on a combine. I harvested 8 acres like that last year. late maturing corn, ended up blowing over and wasn't dry till almost february. just went in on frozen ground. the down corn actually seemed to work better cause with the stuff that was standing, the reel would push it forward and knock it over. with it down, i just ran the header real low and took in the whole stalk. if it's standing up still, probably want to set the cutter just below the ear, and it would probably work best with the reel off completely, or at least set all the way up.

There is a lot of research going on now about grazing standing corn. We've got several farmers who are planting corn just for winter grazing. Not sure if thats an option for you or not.

If there are ears, chop it in to a pile to feed and I bet the cows eat it like candy.

Chop it just below the ears.

We had a really warm sunny weekend here and got it picked up today. Was very surprised it dried out enough, got stuck once in the process. We did pile it,only got about 7 12ft high dump loads off it.That part of the field is poorly drained, and with all the rain this year,it was pretty short anyways.Gave a loader full over the fence to the dry cows while I was packing it and they love it.Will have to watch it though,it's very dry and may spoil/mold.

Thanks, will likely do just that,if there was more of it,would try the grain head on the combine suggestion, but the combine's cleaned up and stored for the winter,so will likely just chop it with the head up all the way.thanks again.
