Depends what the straw is worth to you. It will cost you to replace with fertilizer what you take off.
As to the 4400....I drilled oats with my alfalfa and cut the oats just above the small alfalfa plants to get the straw, using a 4420 and it worked just fine.
Of coarse, that was about five years ago and I got a good buck for the straw from contractors.
