I have made the call to start looking for some thing newer and bigger, reduce my tractor herd and I am looking at getting a 5088 or a 5288. First one is tomorrow, 5088, duals, 8000 hours, only beeb used for haying the last decade. Has 600# weights, triple remotes. Please advice what to check out on it? Thank you in advance!

I would suggest you go to Triplertractors.com. That is they guy that you want to talk to. He is very knowledgable on the 88 series and a very nice guy to talk to. If you have a question he has the answer.

Three things to check on.
First has it had the tranny updates.
Second has it had the tranny updates.
Third has it had the tranny upates.
You get the idea. Other than that those tractors are pretty straight forward. Chris has some very good advice as well. That phone call he mentions would be time well spent. Good luck and PICTURES, man, PICTURES.

Like everbody says, the tractor is pretty much bulletproof, just make sure the transmission shifts well, 466 is good, tranny as issues, if not updated, the best tractor IH put out before the merger. Got a 5488, needs overhauled, but the transmission is updated, Love the thing!

they all have rearend trouble and they don't make the parts to fix them. you have to machine magnum parts to fix them. no used parts available as the junk yards can't find any good ones. BEWARE buying a 5088 or any of those style tractors. the lesson cost a little over 10k. this tractor was a one owner 5500hours that was mainly used for planting.

If it's a 88 Series ! RUN DON'T Walk ! Go Find Some Thing Else ! There Nothing But Problems.Even The Guy's Around Here That are DIE Hard IH Guys Won't Buy Them .

Looks like you are now looking in a different direction. However as already stated look for an updated trans. Parts and labor were nearly $10K from an CIH dealer for our low hour 5288. Read several posts that you can get aftermarket parts and not replace everything and it makes a pretty reliable transmission (but not bullet proof like the complete update)for a lot less money. I don't like the 5088 nor the later 7110 because they didn't use bearings on the differential pinion shafts and it might be a 2 vs 4 pinion differental. Get a 5288 or 5488 with updated trans and you will be fine. Only problems will be coping with the front opening cab doors and using the poorly designed/functioning hydraulic controls.
