A Farmall: How much mower is too much?

I found a little A Farmall today by accident. It was for sale in a front yard. The guy wanted $1200.00. It ain't perfect but its ok. I would like to run a belly mower on it to mow my yard which is about four acres. How much mower can I run on this power wise? Any thoughts are appreciated.

A 5 foot mower is ALL a Cub wants, so I think that an A would do fine with that. 6 feet would give it real good load in tall grass, but should do alright with a lawn. Anything over that is definitely too much.

I've got a 5 foot Woods with all the attaching parts for a Farmall A. I'm in the wrong corner of the country(abundant northeast)! You're undoubtedly at least half a country away!

i have a farmall b with a 59 woods belly mower under it. same engine and hp as an a. handles the 59 fine, 2nd gear in medium to medium heavy grass. if it gets out of hand, 1st gear. i think a 6 footer is a little more suited for an h. depends on your type of grass, ie sparse or heavy.

I have used all The Farm All letter series tractors. They are a good tractor.I put your post in the Looney bin.

We have a 59 on a C witch I believe is the same engine, works ok in first gear, second it leaves it a little rough. But everyones grass is different.

I have a 5 foot mower on an A and it runs it okay. I also have a 6 foot mower on a 140 and it hauls it okay. I don't think that an A can handle a 6 foot mower.

I have a 6' rear mower on a 140 (C123) and it's worked great for over 20 yrs on 5 acres. A 5' would work for sure on yours. 6' would be a maybe but I'd try one out before I bought it.

I have a 5ft on a C Allis Chalmers. I run it wide open in 1st gear if the grass has any height to it at all. I'd not go larger than a 5ft on an A Farmall.

I agree a 5 foot belly mower should work just fine.

I bought a Yanmar 186D with a Woods L59 belly mount, which is a 5 foot.

The Yanmar is rated at 18 HP. The A Farmall is rated 13 HP at the drawbar and 16 at the PTO. Actual Nebraska test results were 16.32 at the drawbar and 18.34 on the belt (same as PTO).

My Yanmar would handle about 6 inch tall grass HP wise, the limiting factor being belt slippage with all the pully's the belt goes around.

I just (yesterday) bought a Case-IH 6 foot rear mount trimming mower. RM72 to be exact. I know I have the power to pull a 6 foot, I had my 6 foot BMB three point shredder on it. I just don't have enough weight even with 2 small Ford suitcase weights hanging on the weight bracket. But getting off subject of yours, a 5 foot would work fine.

My Woods will be for sale if the RM72 works well. DOUG
