paystar dump truck

my 1987 paystar has no brakes. havent ran it in about 5 yrs and wanted to get it running for corn season last year but it wouldnt start. does anybody know what could be wrong with the brakes. i thought the air compresser and thought i would buy a used 1 just to find out and i dont think it is pads either. ive replaced the air compresser in it once before.

as stated needing more info: get the engine started first, to spin compressor to try/build up air, then we can go from there.

Does your air tanks have a valve for manual bleeding the tank, if so, you can put a air fitting into the valve, use a portable air tank and put at least 90 lbs of air in the tank, this will allow you to have the air brakes release and can be towed closer to the shop for engine diagnostics. It also helps to find air leaks without running the engine air compressor, while checking for leaks.Just be sure not to go over the recommended amount of air pressure your truck uses,or else the pop off valve will blow, possibly, causing a wet or dirty stain in your undergarments,if you aren't expecting it.LOL

Well first off do you have it running??? If it does not run then you do not have working brakes since no air no brakes plus the one set of wheels if not 2 are locked up since no air the brakes will lock up. So do you have it running yet?? If not then how do you know the brakes do not work??

You most likely have spring brakes on the rear. Look for
brakes with the double cans then remove the rubber cover on
top. Inside you will see a large bolt. Turn bolt until the brakes
release the bolt will be sticking out of the can by then. Be
sure to reset the brakes when it's running.

You are talking about an old International truck with a gas engine and air brakes? You need to get it running,or fill the tanks with air somehow, and then push your button in,then adajust the brakes. If Its sat for 5 years the shoes will probably be stuck. If the compressor doesnt build any air,its probably the governor which is a aluminum thing thats bolted to the compressor with 2 bolts and has a small air line attached to it.You have to get it running, and air in the tanks and then see what you have.If it does have spring brakes, you can cage the spring brakes, which means you take your cage bolts out of the holder on the spring brake, they have a T on one end and a nut and washer on the other. You put the t in the spring brake into the slot inside, and turn it a quarter turn so its locked in and then tighten the nut until the brakes are released, then you can drag it to a shop, but you would be way farther ahead to get the engine running and the brakes working where it sets if possible, because if you get the brakes released, and its not running, then if you pull it,you dont have any brakes so it could end up running over something. So you need a wrecker to pull it or a tow bar where it cant run off.
Most of the time an air brake system wont build air its because of the governor on or around the air compressor.Since the governor is made out of aluminum it wears out rather fast. Also if the air compressor is worn out it wont pump as good as it should, but it would have to be broke to not pump air. There are other things like the valves in the top of the head, but they are springs and little round flat piece of metal that can get stuck if they are carboned up.You need to talk to a mechanic if its not the governor.

somethings not right here, the only paystar i know of is a 5000 series ih, if thats the truck it should have air brakes, any air failure should cause the spring brakes to lock the wheels, preventing a runaway, unless someone did some swapping but then the truck would have no parking brake, are you saying the truck will roll without air pressure in the reserve tanks? or will it not move once aired up? if thats the problem, after 5 years the shoes are probably rusted to the drums from sitting, in which case you need to block several of the wheels with something big, air up the truck push the park valve in, then take a bfh and pound the drums to shock the brake shoes loose, really need more specific info here there are other things that could be malfunctioning from the d-2 governor not working correctly to a diverter valve being plugged up or blown and dumping all the air, to the reserve tanks being full of water if they wernt drained dailey [ if the truck doesnt have a air dryer on it ] see if you can get more info

You need to think simple here - You have 2 problems, Don't run and no brakes.
You can fix it anyway you wish.
I would try to get some air to the brakes and get it into the shop - pull the back wheels and drums to have a look at what is going on. Perhaps free and lube all moving parts. Check wheel seals and so on.
If your truck has been sitting that long you should do that anyway.
Sooner or later you will have to work up front and get it running to check the compresser and govener. Also the foot valves have been known to have problems.

You don't need brakes if it doesn't run- it'll just sit there, harmlessly. And if it has air brakes, you can't figure out what's wrong without the truck running.

Get it running, then give us more specifics on the symptoms.

yes it is a ih paystar 5000 dump truck. id like to get it running sometime to have a spare truck but first i need to get brakes fixed. i get it eventually. those suggestions will probably work. thanks
