Dirt Breakfast

Well fig!

Took the Alpha mare out to gather calves this morning; it was her first time out this year.

Yep, she tested me and she won......... in a big way!

Sooooo, we then spent 30 minutes on re-indoctrination of just who the heck was gonna be boss of this year's undertakings. Had 'er spinnin' and stoppin' on a dime by the time we were done. :>)

Kind of embarrassing tho; glad no one was around to witness that little headfirst plunge into the gravel. But, oh Lordy! I'm gonna be stiff and sore in the morning. :>(

Allan,

When you're done re-indoctrinating your pony, how about coming to Tennessee and fix mine. I have a Thoroughbred mare that came off the track in Kentucky. She's WAY too high-spirited for this old man. It's a battle just to catch her in the pasture, and then the war of wills continues until I put her back.

If I could find anyone foolish enough to take her, I'd gladly give her away.

Well, fig, indeed! We're used to seeing lots of pictures in your posts, and that's one we'd have especially liked to see! LOL

My wife trains horses- in an arena with nice soft footing- she says it slows them down, and also much softer landing. She's 62, probably will call it quits in a year or 2.

I know what you mean about the "schooling"- more than once I've stopped by where she was training- she's just about ready to call it a day (and we're goin' out to dinner), when ol' Dobbin does something untoward- Mrs. rolls her eyes, says "you might as well go on home- now I'll be another half hour, at least."

She used to work with the caretaker at the arena, who recently passed away- he had a sign in his barn- "Charlie's Charm School". By acclamation of all his relatives, the sign was given to my wife, and now occupies a place of honor in our barn. She also got the Tennessee Walker back that she had sold him 17 years ago. RIP, Charlie Richards.

I have never seen my wife take a spill and I hope I never do. She will usually lunge them for a good bit of time after tacking them up just to make sure they get all their bucks and snorts worked out before she gets in the saddle. Her oldest mare (around 17 I think) is pretty docile and we don't have any concerns with her. The younger one (around 4) I probably wont ride for another few years, she's a sweetheart but a bit more spirited. She's about as green as I am! lol

Hope you're not too stiff and sore for too long!

Hurts a lot worse than it used to huh?????? Our stallion doesn't get ridden often but is pretty well behaved for still having the jewels. Been 2 years since he had anyone on his back. The mares that need bred are about a half mile from the house (where he is) so we lead him out and back. Was in the round pen day before yesterday with him and figured I'd try it out. Got on without a saddle and just a piece of baler twine tied to the sides of his halter. Went real well. Rode him out and back thru town to the house like that. Rode him the same way to and from this morning. Fooled with him a couple hours trimming hooves and just bein buddies. Went back and cleaned his area a couple hours ago, went in the stall next to his (just seperated by a 3 bar gate about 4ft tall) bent to open a bale of hay and he reached over, grabbed me by the side of the neck, picked me up and gave me a good shake and dropped me. I weigh about 260 when my hair is wet and he grabbed me like a dish rag. Blood everywhere and all I had was a bucket of lime that I dust the stalls with. Slapped a handful of that on it to stop the blood and went to the house. Wife cleaned everything up and got me patched up. Just waiting on the aches and pains to come along. Gotta watch them with both eyes.

No pics this time kruser.........

used to carry me a long wooden handled screw driver in my back pocket for just such occaisons.a tap or two between the ears generally brought one around to my way of thinking pretty fast.LOL sold my last old horse probably 7-8 years ago now.Quite frankly I was getting scared of them, either my skins thinner and things hurt worse ,or that dang thing could throw you farther!if the cows dont come to the feed truck now,i can saddle that japanese horse a whole lot easier!

We"re just glad that you didn"t break anything, except your pride. Don"t be embarrased. Most of us have been there, done that, in some similar fashion.

Yep, the first thing I usually do when I do something embarassing is look around to see if anyone saw me, the next thing I'll do is go tell the first person I see what I just did.

For sure,

Your wife is right on the money. Didn't even give it a thought nor did I think about the 1,000 lbs of pure muscle coming out of a 6-month hiatus.

That's twice now in the past 6-months that I've been shown that I'm not bullet-proof. First was medical and now this one was "dernedneart" medical. :>)

Tom,

Load 'er in a trailer and I'll meet ya halfway. :>)

In her mind, the two of you are playin' a game. You chase her and she runs......Oh, boy! This is really fun! "That guy can't run nearly as fast as I". :>)

Gotta break that "playtime cycle". So , next few mornings, walk the pasture and don't pay any attention to her; don't even look at her--take your time and just wander around the pasture for 20 or 30 minutes.

Broke horses just cannot stand to be ignored. Pretty soon, she'll be standing at you elbow wanting you to scratch 'er. :>)

Several years ago I was helping a freind gather cows on a green horse and he had been doing real well all morning. I rode up to where the rest of the crew was at and went to get off. Just as I started to throw my leg across he threw a little fit, nothing serious but enough to put me on the ground, on my back, in the cactus. I had on a heavy canvas coat so very few needles made it all the way through. Everybody standing around sure got a laugh, I wasn't so amused at the time. Ruined my coat. Would probably kill me now.

Oh,

My face is all burgered up, but the wife says it sure improves my looks. :>)

Comes as part of the territory I guess,

Dirt breakfast? Reminds me of a Dwight Yoakam story and song.

When Dwight was an up and coming star, he dated Sharon Stone for whatever reason. After they broke up she was asked about what it was like to date him, and she said "...dating him was like eating a dirt sandwich". Dwight's response to what she said? The song, "I Aint That Lonely Yet". Listen to the words. And while you're at it, listen to "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere". Some pretty good string and neck bending going on there.

I "installed" a seatbelt on my Trail 90 when I was a kid.not recomended-do not attempt-EVER!Lets just say that I got a case of "roadrash".

Allan,
Been there!, Done That!, Still have the ripped up Shirt to prove it!LOL. I do sympathize with you here.
Next time remember to lengthen the stirrups by at least 1 hole before you Step aboard! When she blows up again, use your spurs and try to job a mud hole in her flanks!!!!
Also using the the Loop of your Lariat then give her the over and under treatment, will reenforce the corrective measures taken.
Hope this helps!
Later,

Yeah,

Think I'm gonna tie down with baler twine next time. :>)

Oh Geasus! It even hurts whin I blink this morning.......groan! :>)

You're not alone, I inadvertently had to comply with gravity yesterday too, while tossing down some ( as you call em ) idiot cubes for the horses. Stepped on the wrong bale! Really helps with your work ethic, starting with just trying to get out of bed and do it again, just flat out sore this morning.

PS, dealing with the same kind of fun over here, fresh horses, riders come back from FLA. this week, well at least I've been able to keep a couple worked to take the edge off em, they sure can be tough after a vacation can't they? Just like us, they need to get up and go to their job everyday !

I spoke too soon. Just last night my wife mentioned that she needs someone to ride her younger mare as we are expecting and she's not riding for the summer. I (perhaps stupidly) volunteered.........I said I was as green as the young roan.........wife reminded me that maybe I'm a little greener than her horse. She's gonna run a few extra laps in the round pen before I get on her!

Oh, you'll do just fine.

Just remember not to have any apprehension or nervousness. They can sense that in you and it will make them 'hyper' up in return.
