I have a question if anyone can help I would be thankfull. I bought my first tractor today, the seller didnt know what model it was. He thought 8n but had been told that was not true. I found the serial #location on the left side of the block and here is what is stamped in the cast block. 8n49x492. This doesnt match with any serial #s in the book but seem to indicate that it is an 8n. The only thing on the tractor that i havent seen on other models is the adjustable spring seat. It does not look like the common u shaped spring. It has a coil spring that can adjust to different levels. Anyway I would like to know what model and if possible year this is. It would help in the restoration project. Thanks

a pic would be helpfull, as 8n engines will innerchange with 9n and also 2n, tractors, the easiest way to tell model is transmission, if it has 4 speeds foward it is a 8n, if it has 3 speeds foward, it is either a 2n or 9n, also 9 and 2n's had 5 bolt wide pattern wheels on the front and wide pattern rims on the rear 8n;s had smaller bolt circle 6 lug wheels on the front and smaller bolt circle on the rear also the seat is a popular delux model much more comfortable than the standard pan seat usually found

There were lots of different aftermarket seats... sounds like you have one.
Quick ID's on early Fords... Flat-head engine (spark plugs on top, pointing straight up) = 1939 to 1952, N-series. 4-speed transmission and 2" nut in center of rear hub = 8N. 3-speed transmission = 9n (or 2N)
