What size disc?

We are getting ready (I hope) to plant some oats and corn in our little patch of ground for our threshing show. Due to some cut-backs in membership help, long story, what size disc can my Farmall M pull? I have access to a 14 foot tandem, but don't know if it can pull it in Loam/clay. This ground was plowed last fall on our plow day and just needs worked a little more. Thanks in advance

It would handle a 10 foot disc fine. We farmed with Olivers together with my Grandfather who had a Farmall H using an 8 foot disc pulling a 8 foot packer. When my Grandfather traded his H for an M he stayed with the 8 foot disc and packer but added an 8 foot spring tooth behind the packer after the first time over.

If ya had duals on the M and the ground layed flat a good running M with a kit in it might do it in second . My S/MTA will handle a 13 -6 disk in the 3rd.high side of the T/A with not a problem with the 16.9 tires but she is pushen over sixty Hp. And our ground is NOT FLAT.

My 140 pulls a 5 foot tandem in second. It could pull more, but any more weight on the back and the front end pops up! A good-running H can pull an 8 foot disc in second (first in sticky parts). I would say that M can pull a 12 foot in second all the time. I certainly wouldn't put it past an M to pull a 14 footer. If you don't mind first gear half of the time, I think it'll work.

Going over it with a good drag will help traction a lot and help keep from bringing up too much grass..
Wheel slippage is probably the limiting factor on plowed ground..
You can usually control the depth the disc will go in..just don't let it go in too deep..especially the 1st time over..
We always pulled an IH #37 disc (10ft+) and harrow in 3rd with our AC WD45 with duals..

Ron..

If it's already plowed, why in the heck would you disc it?

Smack it with a harrow at two or three angles and ya ought to be ready to plant. Or, once over with a good packer.

Welll, the way the clay sticks together along with a wet spring a disc pulling a harrow seems to do the best job from what I remember growing up. Could be that was just the way it was done nd I don't know any better. We are only talking 7 acres or so and all on a hill along a crick. I sure don't have all the answers so any ideas are helpful and if i'm an idiot tell me. lol

If it was in sod, you'll need to disc it. If it was cropped, the others are probably right- just use a cultivator or harrow a few times, "with the grain" the first time, then diagonally.

10' disc will probably be all the M wants, if you're getting deep enough and going fast enough to do it right.

Won't respond to your post/question(s) except to say that some of the other posts crack me up. I'm just waiting for, "Why son, I usta pull a 21 ft behind my 'M' and it handled it just fine."

Cut my teeth pulling a 7 ft. Internationsl disk with a Farmll Regular. 2nd . gear, with a culitpacker and drag, the first time over plowed ground. 3 rd. gear the second time over with the disk and drag alone.

Don't think you want more than a 10 ft. disk behind an M Farmall.

Before wheel assisted Disc's became the norm most every body I knew who farmed with IH M's and H's pulled a 10ft. disc with the M and an 8ft. disc with the H,and most of them were McCormick disc's. That said I think that will still be the norm even tho you are likely to use a wheel lifted disc. My dad pulled a 12' Oliver disc with his 88 and when he got the super 99 he still pulled the same disc if he had to disc with the 99. But that was only my dad's way you understand .

not all ground works up the same, my grandpa used to plow, drag and plant, when we used to spring plow our clay loam 8 miles away we used to disk shortly after plowing and still had lumps and the fall plowing always got disked, as for an M and a 14ft. good luck my grandpa had a good running m with M&W's and didn't go very fast or very deep with a Case 14' SA disk.

You might pull that 14' with an M, buy you're gonna be set pretty light and goin' pretty slow. 10' set deep is going to be about right on plowed ground. Maybe on a sod you could get away with 14'.

what did Donald Rumsfeld say 'ya go into a field with the equipment you got?' You said you are doing this for someone else? Church plot sorta thing? don't ruin your equipment for a charity. charity begins in the tractor seat. You guys! I don't even go down a paved road in 3rd gear hi! Your spinal cords and final drives must show signs of abuse. You have access to a 7 footer? Use that, take your time, don't break anything. you are doing a hillside? With a trike? Too much load back there, at the wrong angle, you got problems. Yep, use the 7 footer, max.

If it was plowed "LAST FALL" you don't have to worry about that (unless you work it way too wet) because the freeze/thaw action takes away the adhesion.
