OT...Feeding 4-H Pigs

My son has a york barrow that weighed 177 lbs today. Our hog show is July 13. I need to hold him to 100 lbs gain between now and then. I am feeding a pretty good quality show feed. He is a good looking pig. I have an idea but hought I would see if anybody has any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

Take him for alot of walks. Even run him alittle. You can cut back on the feed alittle too. Why do you want to keep the rate of gain down? Our county fair gives ribons for the best and most rate of gain.

When they get too big they cannot get in the class that they are inteded for in this being a market hog class.

275-280 seems to be the upper limit for success at our fair. A pig from the same genetics last year weighed 312 at the fair.

One idea I have heard is to cut back on the volume of feed and use oats as filler. Essentially give the same weight of feed per day you are feeding now (get him off the self feeder for sure, but assuming you have done that already) but make a portion of it oats. The pig will not digest much of the nutrition in the oats and there's not much there to start with. This will put it on a diet but make it feel full so it doesn't get destructive/restless. Make sure that there's enough feed there for health but just maintenance for a while.
