Bummer of a morning

Had my biggest cow birth 2 still born heifers this morning, would have been nice calves, about 2-3 weeks early. Cant figure out why. Dont know if I should hamburger the cow now or what. Also found out my brother-like cousen's 7 year old daughter has an overly large heart muscle and docs say it could end her life abrubtl if she over exerts her self. Everything she loves to do outside could make her heart stop. Makes my cow issue seem pretty pety.

Somedays it makes you wonder if you should just go back to bed and hope it"s just a bad nightmare. Sorry for your animal loss that"s hard enough for us cattle farmers to accept with out blaming it on us, as for the young lady it"s always hard to hear of somebody so young with problems so early in life. Put your trust in the man above and he will give you the strength to get you through this and help with the young lady to work through her problems.

Good Morning Dave,

Sorry to hear that the day is off to a rough start. I sure hope and pray for the best regarding that little girls heart condition. That is sure a tough deal. As far as the cow, I had the same thing happen about three years ago, with a nice large Charloais cow. Thought of market or burger crossed my mind, but yet it was of no fault of the cow. Ended up rebreeding her for the next year, and she has birthed several real nice calves since. Now I'm glad I didn't cull her out. Hard call, but if you have the feed for her, and don't necessarily need hamburger or cash, I'd think about it before you make the final decision. Hope your rocky started day gets better quick. This morning as I watched the news regarding the tornadoes in the south, I realized the cold, wet, snowy weather we have here really isn't a big deal. Many others are in a much worse situation than me right now.

If you're in the cattle BUSINESS, you gotta run it like a business. I NEVER gave a cow a second chance, unless her failure to wean a calf every 12 months was something that was clearly not her fault. It's easy to get 'attached' to a particular animal, in which case, you may just have a pet or a hobby.

I operate on the two chance system with our cattle. If a brood cow looses a calf two years in a row, she is gone. I cant find fault in a first calf heifer loosing a calf.....the second time around though.....whole nother story.....

I wouldn't worry too much about the heart thing Dave. When we were kids,a neighbor had that. Doctors said that even crying too hard could kill him.
For that reason though, his parents should have taken him out and beat him to within an inch of his life as soon as he got a clean bill of health. They never dicipined him for fear of doing him in and it didn't do him any favors in life. It took seven and a half to fifteen in State Prison later on to straighten him out (a little).

The problem may have been the 2nd calf, breed her again.
I had a cow from which I had to remove the calf [ survived] she lost a lot of blood, thought she was gone. Since had another calf, no problems.

There was a case here in oz where a trainer threw out a horse because he could not fix its leg, another chap was convinced he could and took the horse, it went on to make 2 million $$$$$. Give it a chance.
