Pretty much got a handle on my little tractor. Gotta do a little tracing to take care of a leak that is more annoying than anything else. Coolant loss is no longer an issue and I've flushed most of the crud out of the radiator (couple more times and I'll put in antifreeze and leave it alone).
Only thing I notice now is that it used somewhere between a cup and a pint of oil in about 15 hours of running/work. Is that acceptable for a 47 YO tractor/motor?

Thanks, Dave

The calculation is easy.

Estimate annual hours used. Divide by 15 to come up with the # of pints used in a year. Multiply the pints by the going cost of oil. Multiply that by the remaining years you're still going to be able to climb up on that sucker and go putter around. Compare the result to the the cost of a rebuild.

And there ya go.

Taking into account the benefit of the smoke in keeping skeeters away is optional.

Your mileage may vary. Batteries not included.

But if that oil was burned and not leaked, it replaced diesel that would have been burned.

When I complained that the new L10 Cummins engine in my tractor used oil, the Cummins shop guy showed me the spec in the shop manual, saying that using a qt in 4 hrs was considered normal.
Thats 16 hours to the gallon !!!???
I guess my complaining about using a gallon in 40-50 hrs kind of fell on deaf ears.
Kind of frustrating when the "OLD" tractor with a 30 year old, 8,000 hr motor still ran 100 hrs before wanting a gallon of oil.
I never did add that, as I normally changed it's oil at 100 hrs .

Jon I am almost certain what he showed you was THE ACCEPTED MAXIMUM not the normal. Other words it would have to burn more than a quart in 4 hours for any consideration as to warrant repair or action. Totatly diffrent from accepted NORMAl
Manfactures kinda skirt around issues like that in warranty. I would think if you cried to cummings rep you might get someone to lok at it.
