Never heard of that but it sounds like it would work if the rain didn't wash it away. I've heard of planting onions with potatoes to keep the ground wet.

How do you get them to produce radishes? Mine just go to tops. I may get a few to pull, but not many. I plant the seeds by hand about 2 inches apart. Is that too close?

thats too far apart. just sprinkle the seed in and thin them later as they grow . they can pretty much touch each other.

Plant as early in the spring as you can and later in the summer.
Keep the ground moist.
Full sun.
Thin when they come up.

They do not like the hot summer heat but they do like sunlight.

Here we have the best crop planted in may/june and september.

Mine grow fine, but always wormy. Went to buying them at the Farmer's Market, grown locally, organic, and never wormy. Asked the guy how he does it- believe it or not, insect netting over the rows! Says its a fly that lays its eggs on the exposed part of the radish, and if you can keep the flys out, no worms! Guess I'll try it this year, if garden ever gets dry enough to work. I'll try the wood ashes, too, just to be on the safe side.

Plant them close enough together that they can't put out a full rosette of leaves- if they have to compete for air space, they'll grow a radish rather than just tops. Keep pulling the larger ones as they grow, so the runts then get a chance.
