Weed control in pumpkins

Figurin' on planting a few hills of pumpkins. What can I use for weed control? Broke the hoe handle so that's out. Thanks!!

Oh, I'll probably drive by the patch with my tractor once in awhile.

It is hard to do with pumpkins since they vine out all over the place and the vine uses weeds to grab onto to stabilze it and you want open {uncovered} soil for the vine to root. The vine will root under every leaf stem. The best method may be a weed spray unless you celebrate Earth Day.

I use leaf mulch. It keeps in plenty of moisture and stops weeds while it's there. I side dress with fertilizer on my monster pumpkins.

I beleive, without looking it up, it was Dual and Command that I used last year. Sprayed after planting before anything came up and stirred the soil a little with a crowfoot cultipacker afterwards. Seem to work better than anything else I've used. I plant about 4acers of them though. I also walk through with a hand sprayer after weeds come up and spot spray with roundup mix which would make more sense with just a few plants.

I've always suffered with them (and squash) for in the garden. Hoe and tiller until the vines got too long, then tip-toeing in them to pull the tall weeds before they set seed. Then last year I had the bright idea to plant them next to my barn where there is established sod/lawn. Just mowed. Then mowed around the vines as they grew. Pumpkins overpowered that lawn grass like it was nothing as they grew out. Had a great crop and didn't even have to truck the poor ones in to feed them to my hogs in the fall! This probably only works where you already have lawn-type grass established though.

If your garden is small enough, try a product called PREEN.

You shake the granules out over the garden, and work them in with a rake before the weeds start growing.

I used the stuff on my small garden last year and I was totally amazed. Almost no weeds at all. Plus I have another 3-4 years supply yet with a two-pack of jugs for $20.

Put some oats in, heavy. By June it should begin to head and at that point either way you can burn it down and then roll or if no chem wanted roll and crimp. Just plant into the resultant mulch layer which will end up being a few inches thick.

Dachtal herbicide. It is cleared for all vegtable and garden use.

Plant the pumpkins, then when they have 3 - 4 leaves, spray.

Been doing it for years. Good weed control.

If you read the label, Preen is just granulated Trifluralin (Treflan). So, Treflan will work. Also, Dual II magnum. I believe they are both labeled for pumpkins, but cant remember off hand.
