Looking at an M

I'm looking at an M. The guy has had it for a couple of years. Bought it to flip and kept it for a while. It's in good shape, no welds, runs very well, brakes work well, etc. When I went to look at it he hadn't run it in a long time - there was no battery in it. He threw a 12 volt battery in it. I asked it if was still 6 volt. He said it had been switched to 12 volt. It started normally (not fast like a 6 volt starting on 12). It looks to me like a stock generator (although I was trying not to be obvious like I didn't believe him).

Here's the question. How fast would a 6 volt coil burn up? If this guy has a charging system that doesn't work and put a 12 volt in there would it run for a while? The coil hasn't been new recently and it didn't heat up and I ran it for at least 45 minutes solid. I forgot my multi-tester or I would have checked it. It doesn't appear to be cobbled up and I think I will go for it, but I'm just trying to figure out whether I can drive it home (an hour or so) or better trailer it (which I don't have).

I guess I better go back with my tester next weekend.

Can you startit and disconnect the battery to run it home? Or does it have to have the battery hooked up to run?

I would check with my tester...it is POSSIBLE to change one over and meke it look decent like it is stock: using a 12v generator or having a 6v rewound to 12volt, and a couple of places do sell 12v coils that are made to look like IH 6v coils, but not many people take the time to do that. Does the coil look like an original? if not does it have a stamping on it?

if you like and want the tractor what makes the difference get it home and then fix it cant be all that expensive to fix

I have seen a 6V coil blow up with 12V put to it but I've never heard of it happening beside this one time.

12V was put into a 6V coil with battery charger on the battery. The guys working on it left for break and forgot to take the power off the coil. Came back from break, hit the starter and BOOM! It was a tar filled coil and it blew the guts 3/4 of the way out of the can. Made for a good display afterwards. Everyone in the shop was walking around stiff legged for awhile afterwards. Jim

Maybe you could put an ignition resistor in line just before the coil. You could have leads already on the resistor so you would only need to unhook one wire. If it won't run with the resistor in place then I would say you for sure can run it without the resistor and not worry.

From my experience the coil will go fast. It probably has the same 6 v starter, which will run on 12v with no problem. I have AC model M's that have been started on 12v with a 6 v starter for years. If the tractor ran for 45 min I think you are ok to go. Stan

If it runs and the price is right, load it up and take it home. You can figure it out there. If it isn't 12 v, all you need is a 50% resistor and they cost about $5.

Get on it while it's running and drop it in 5th gear and head home the electrical s on those dudes ain't nothin but a thing! Enjoy! Oh and BTW leave a check you can't out run the cops.

A battery is needed to control voltage. It might be OK, but if (for instance) it had an alternator, the alt would fry and possibly make way over voltage W/O battery control. If it had a mag, there would be no issue. I would take a ballast resistor with me and try running it with the resistor in place, or purchase a 12v no resistor required coil (~15$) and drive it. A trailer would rent for far more than a new coil!! Jim
