OT-lawn sprinkler under ground pipe

Just bought this place. Old sprinkler system that has not been used for years. Big sprinkler in middle of front lawn. Two controls with pipe to back yard, one pipe coming into it. Every thing is black plastic pipe. No connections to water system, and no holes in the walls to show where it connected. I would like to tie into the one in the front yard if I could trace it. Is there any way to trace plastic pipe?

Disconnect the pipe at the valve going to the front yard and insert a metal electrical fish tape. Use a locator to trace it or you could try a kids metal detector, they are usually not buried very deep.

I don't have any valve going to the front yard...that's the problem..that's what I am trying to find, where is used to be.

Probably had a garden hose connection, and just hooked it up to a spigot on the side of the house when they needed it...

You may not have ever had a pipe entering the house to feed water to the sprinklers, it may be it hooked into the water line outside somewhere with a valve buried in the ground somewhere. There could be an electrically operated valve somewhere also with a controll box in the garage or basement, or elsewhere on the premises. It could also be that it was fed water from an irrigation pump that was placed near a pond or stream, or even it's own well pump.

Do what 36... said, but in reverse then. That"s what we do. Or dig up the head, might be able to see which direction the pipe is running at least. Or rig up a fitting on the pipe by the head and blow compressed air or water in it and see where it"s coming out at.
