Sowing Oats Last Week

Using my grandad's 1941 B Farmall to pull a 10 ft VanBrunt grain drill

Probably worked out fine. Last several years have drilled with a Farmall 200. Doesn"t take a big tractorto pull a grain drill. This year I plan to use MF180 with duals. Hopefully, will leave field smoother, as I am also seeding alfalfa for next year"s hayland. If the weather ever cooperates, that is. Doesn"t look too promising for next week.

I planted many an acre of oats and wheat plus some rye and spelts with a high side wheel 13 hole(runner) John Deere Van Brunt drill and towing a double drum Dunham cultipacker, usually pulled with a Farmall H. (With the cultipacker this would have been a little too much for a B Farmall). Actually drilled quite a lot of grain after dark in the spring and fall.

what is the proper word to describe putting oats in the ground sowing, planting, drilling. my dad would sow small grains, plant tomatoes, corn cabbage,

Dad never had much luck sowing oats in unplowed ground. They came up reasonably OK but yield was poor. Never got them in early enough so that was also a factor.
