My Ford tractor is stamped 8N on the side of the engine, however the serial number is NA189 - so is it an 8N? some have told me it is possible this was built on the 2nd day of production in 1947.

Could be...but really no way to know because so much has been swapped in/out on N"s over the years. We have a 2N with an engine that has an 8N prefix and a lower number than yours...does that mean we have one of the last 2Ns made and they ran out of 9N engines? Possibly but probably not!
Best I can say is crawl underneath your rearend and check the casting dates on each axle trumpet...if they are close to each other and slightly predate the engine number you MAY be able to assume that is what you have...if they are not close to the same date you really have no way to know because probably one of the trumpets has been changed and who knows which one is correct?
Unfortunately unless you are able to track the service history of an N by purchasing it from a known 1st or 2nd owner, or you have some other outstanding feature that coincides with the engine serial number (ex: a real low serial number 9N block on a tractor with an aluminum hood, and dash, and I beam radius rods would make a real early 9N a safe assumption) Ns are darn hard to date.

Does it have 4 forward gears, then 8N with a starting year of 1948 altho production started in 1947. If 3 speeds forward then a 1947 2N.

We have a late 2N, it has a lot of 8N parts, must have been built during change over when 8N parts came avail. Know it is original as the original owner was a family member.
It has a 3 speed transmission and 2N rear wheels so it is a 2N.
We were confused too.

They are not only hard to date - it's hard to know if I have a 2,8,or9. I did get one reply that said if it has 3 forward gears (which mine has) it cannot be an 8 but is probably a 2N - Do you agree with this?
