What would you do....

Sold a cole 2 row planter to my brothers friend last week. It has been sitting here in the shed for ages unused. Took it apart, cleaned and greased it up to be ready to go. It had one cotton plate and one corn plate. I told him about that before it was loaded up. He said no problem, I'll get another corn. Well, he takes it home and tries to plant corn. Long story short he is now mad saying I sold him a POS. Brother wants me to refund his money after I held it for him and missed 5 potential buyers while waiting for him to pick it up. I'm thinking its his now as it was sold with no warranty implied.

I HATE A-holes like that. I'll tell you exactly what I'd do,I'd tell him where he can stick it then I'd tell everybody I ran across, friend and stranger just what an a$$ he is! That SOB wouldn't dare ever cross my path again til the day he dies.

I'd give him his money back and not have anything else to do with him or my brother (business wise)..............

The most important thing is to preserve the relationship with your brother. Explain it all to him.

Your reputation and relationship is also on the line here.. Ya I know your mad and PO'd.

Sit down with him and see if you can find the real issue. Was it the plate problem or something bigger and not really "Ready to go" as you stated.

Why should he be mad? Did he talk to you yet? If not then he is not man enough to address you. In this case let your brother know if his friend wants to discuss then he can call you.

But my advise is take the high road this Easter weekend, refund the money, Craiglist it and it'll be sold by Monday. Then don't do business with him again.

Jeff

If there were 5 other potential buyers as you say, shouldn't be to hard to sell again. Refund it and make everyone happy.
Do the right thing.

And if the brother sides with the friend,he's as big an a$$ as the other guy.

Let me describe this guy and tell me if I'm right. He's a city boy who thinks he's Daniel Boone, bought the planter for food plots. He makes more than he'd ever be worth if he was paid for his personality. He wears camo, but in a slicked up kind of way.He drives a new extended cab Chevy pickup with camo on it. He's on at least his second wife, even though his first wife was a super nice gal who ANY decent guy would give his left one to be married to,but his second wife is fancier. Nobody ever says no to him because he's such a condecending jerk. Am I close?

This guy needs somebody to finally hand him his lunch. If he was ever to pull a stunt like that on me,I'd slap him up side the head so hard I'd break his ear drum.

I agree with Jeff give him his cash back if he returns it in the same condition as purchased, and let him know not to ask for anything else

OK...here's what I'd recommend. If the planter is in as-delivered condition, give him his money back, take the planter back, and be done with this guy.

Then, TO PREVENT THE MATTER FROM REPEATING, purchase the matching plate needed for the planter, and install it...saving back the mismatched plate.

NOW you'll have a planter that won't have the problem that caused the hard feelings to begin with. NOW you can sell the planter with a clear conscience, because no one will be able to say that anything was misrepresented simply because they ignored something that YOU WON'T HAVE TO TELL ANYONE AGAIN ANYWAY.

I was a manager for several years in a company, and the managers who preceded me spent all their time "putting out fires" from problems such as the one you described. When I became manager, I decided the BEST way to "put out fires" was to examine what CAUSED them, and do whatever made sense to PREVENT these "fires" to begin with. Call me lazy, but in a pre-emptive way...but avoiding stress is always preferable, in MY eyes, to trying to repair bad business or personal relationships.

And since this guy is a friend of your brother, this gets into BOTH business and personal areas. So learn from this one, make amends as best you can, and move on. My free advice, and worth every cent.

I'm not sure I see a cotton plate in the above post pictures, but no matter. Did someone try putting corn in and pull it across hard ground to check the spacing? Like I said in an earlier post, you can change the speed of the plates and change the spacing. Possibly you can just reverse the sprockets. Anyway, the guy is being unreasonable and I wonder if he knows how to use a planter.

rrlund, you hit the nail on the head. He owns a very large company nearby. So everyone should bow down to his money. It was indeed ready to go as stated, but you can't plant corn well with a cotton plate!

It will be a lot easier to sit in church Sunday if you just get the planter, and give him his money back. Smile when you do it (it will drive him crazy)

If the planter is still in the same condition you sold it in, I would just refund the money and take it back. That clown isn't worthy of the headache. Sold a Chevy once and 2 weeks later got a call from the woman I sold it to. She claimed it was junk and the engine blew up in it. I went to take a look at it at the garage it was hauled to. The mechanic there told me the woman's son had about $400 in fines to pay and I should go down to the police station for futher details. Seems the 'kid' blew the engine up while trying to get away from a cop when he was caught drag racing. I didn't know that Chevy could do 120 mph. I liked that car so I told the woman to call me after the cops released it. Never heard from her again.
This time of year that planter should sell for 2X what the first sale was.

That was a pic I got off the net. I had corn seed in it when he picked it up. I showed him it jammed and threw the chain off. I'll just buy a plate and waste one whole day of my time Before I try to list it again. This is the reason I never sell anything! Thanks for you opinions.

As far as I'm concerned he owns the planter..You were upfront and honest with him...What part did he not understand..

I would just give his money back. THEN!!!! I would tel him and THE BROTHER to go to He!!. I quit selling things to "friends" of my family. You get the same headaches as if you deal with family without any of the good part of family.

I had a good "68" JD 4020 for sale last fall. My youngest brother brings his city slicker neighbor to look at it. I tell him it is was just sold. He had bought a different tractor at an estate auction two year ago. HE went back to the widow complaining that the tractor had problems. He wanted her to pay for repairing a fifty year old tractor that was sold AS-IS.

I know that many on this web site are rookie/city people trying to learn farming/equipment. I will live with missing the one honest newbie for not having to deal with the two jerks I get waiting for the good one.

(quoted from post at 13:35:09 04/21/11)If he was ever to pull a stunt like that on me,I'd slap him up side the head so hard I'd break his ear drum.

That's cause you ain't got people skills........................

Church has nothing to do with this does it?????

rrlund- So you're going to start a rift in the family and the community over a stupid corn planter? In a small community (and within a family), you can only be a "hard-liner" a few times- then there's nobody left who'll talk to you.

Life's too short. I fight with people for a living, and its not as much fun as you heard about.

Tell him where he can find the plate that he needs, and leave it at that. I hate diks like that as they cause more trouble than there would be if they were shot.

If he's too stupid to buy the correct plates he needs then that's he own stupid fault.... If your brother doesn't know that he isn't much better.
As to the suggestion others have made of you buying plates for him... WHY? A plate is only as good as the seed it's matched to. You don't know the seed size; can't know which plate is required.... so you're only tossing money down the tube buying plates at random.

I'm fortunate that I don't go to church so I don't need to worry about having this on my concience when I say this.... You sold him the damn thing AS IS with the additional warning that he needed plates. He got as much or more than he paid for. I wouldn't worry about him or the brother.
