Engine Compression Check

Without a compression gauge or a mechnic handy what are some tell tale signs of lost compression or blow back as I have heard on Ford Tractor engines?

Work the tractor, see how it runs, sounds, pulls, feels. I have a ford 4000 gasser, she has lots of blow by but she pulls and runs a brush hog like a champ.

Watch the blow by (crankcase vent). If you see lots of white gasses and oil dripping out you have a problem.

Compression gauge is not that expensive, and can pay for itself many times over in one use.
