Spring Work

The weather here just does not want to warm up and I have not seen much of the Sun lately. I wish the ground drying was strictly a matter of the water perking down but we need some warmth to get it fit to till. I just have this feeling that everything is gonna break loose the first week in May and I am starting to get a little old for several consecutive 16 plus hour days. I've got maybe 12 acres scratched up out of 296 acres total to do.
Just wondering how many are on schedule here with spring work?

Not a wheel is turning here in my part of NW Iowa. It won't happen for the rest of the week by the way the forecast sounds. Had 3" of rain in the past week and the ground temp is in the 30's every morning. A couple of guys I know got oats in on sandy soil but zero field work has been done otherwise. Some of the bigger farmers are getting nervous but I can get the corn in in three easy days so I'm not too bothered yet. Jim

I"m running behind too. We had snow on the ground this morning. Rain tomorrow and Wednesday - then Friday and Saturday according to the weather geru. I have plowing done on my oat field, but gotta do a lot of disking and cultivating before planting. Rough plowing job, and I need it smooth and level for hayland following years. A little warm soil would be a blessing too.

Not bad schedule wise. We are having our 8th wettest April so far, with rain every day this week. I made a really good call and rushed alfalfa planting and getting fertilizer on grass hay week of March 20. Good thing too, most everyone else is terribly behind. Tillage isnt an issue, I'm back to all notil this year and wont plant corn until we get a cutting of wheat silage off some ground and alflafa off the other.

Weather has still made it rough though. Not only has it been wet but unusually cool. Pastures are slow growing and I'm still feeding a little hay. Been trying to build fence when its dry enough. Finally finished up 4500 feet of 4 stand high tensile. It took 6 days, but they were spread over 5 weeks.

I wish I could get no-till to work profitably here. Almost have to have an ideal season of rain and warmth which seldom happens.
