Well, I have had it with this old 1968 Holley Carb :) I disassemble it on my Ford 4000 tractor, removed the main jet and piston assembly, clean with carb cleaner, and compressed air, set the float to 63/64" like manual states, put that sucker back on and STILL floods, it even drips gas out of the air horn!

I guess I suck at carb work amongst other things. So do I get aftermarket Tisco or Zenith Brand?

thanks,

tyler

It still sounds like the float is not closing the needle and the gas it just pouring in.

I know next to nothing about those Holley tractor carbs, but I suspect they are made of aluminum, and aluminum is prone to warping, and if that is the case you would be better off to buy a new Zenith or maybe a Marvel-Schebler if one is available for your tractor. Incidently, Tisco is a supplier that sells both Zenith and MS carbs. They do not make carbs, so there is no Tisco brand carburetor.

Having said that, before you toss that Holley, give it one more shot, and this time clean the needle valve AND seat with spray carb cleaner, blow them dry, and then give each a quick spray of aerosol silicon lube, let it dry, and then assemble the carb. Make double sure the float height is correct, the float is not full of gas, and the float is not hanging up or dragging on anything.

Leaky float?

Dip the float in some very hot tap water...if a stream of bubbles come from the float, you need a new one.

IIRC the holley carbs do not have a replaceable seat on them, so if the seat is worn you will constantly get fuel leakage past them.

You can replace the needle and other parts/gaskets though. I think NH dealers even offer a new carb and it is not a holley its a Zenith. That to me was a clue that the holley really sucked. Mine was a constant leaker too, even after 2 rebuilds.

I have many years of experience tearing down holleys for cars, vacuum and double pumpers. Best thing I ever did was switch to using Edelbrock (carter) carbs. I have 1/10 the headaches with Edelbrocks.

Double check your gaskets. I have run into improperly made bowl gaskets that blocked the bowl vent hole and caused flooding. Made a hole in the right place on the gasket and problem solved! Just a thought.

Another poster on these boards, MNut, has a 4500 backhoe, like mine. He had the same issue as I did, runs fine at slower rpms, dies after warming up and running at high rpms. Clean the carb, ok for a while. He switched his Holley to the Zenith...end of problem. Reminded me of the similar issue with JD 3010/3020. Marvel Schebler or Zenith.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will troubleshoot using your guys advice. Most likely I will change to a Zenith Carb.
