I am doing research on grain production in the US and need info on variable costs of rasing corn. Info on fertlize, seed, diesel, line, equipment costs would be helpful-looking for cost per acre. I do not need to calculate the cost of ther land, that will come later or the production ratesfo r different types of land. Thanks a million

With a goal of 175 bushel to acre my costs are as follows here in south eastern Iowa.

P and K $75 per acre.
Nitrogen $93 per acre.
Seed $88 per acre.
Herbicides $30 per acre.
Fuel $9 per acre. Prepayed in January at $2.75 a gallon.
And I figure $75 an acre equipment costs. That"s what it would cost if I hired it all done for me.

We only lime about every 10 years here and it cost about $30 an acre with a 3 ton rate. So about $3 an acre per year.

Total of $373 per acre.

Inspired by Garys absolute command of his costs, I did a little quick figuring.
Seed $65
Dry starter fert. some N, mostly P, some K, and Zinc- $68
N $70
I haven't purchased chemicals yet.
No lime requirement- alkaline soil.
All purchased last fall. Sure wish my fuel supplier had an early purchase plan!
For many years, 100 bu. was the standard. Now if I don't get at least 140, I'm disappointed. Have been spoiled the last few years by yields closer to 200 than 100.
I guess I should have incorporated my location into my name when I registered, as it only shows up in modern view, and location is everything! Southern Cayuga county, central NY. The biggest grain producing county in the state. We pale in comparison to the midwest, but it's as good as it gets here!

Im running about 380-550 an acre depending on cash rents different P&K requirements and other factors. I put down about 100lbs of N in for of urea so about 200lbs of urea and then 50-80lbs of N sidedressed with 28% and average about 60lbs of K and 60lbs of P for maintenance levels. Some fields didnt get an application based on high test levels, I spray myself for around 12 bucks an acre for pre's. Insecticides here and there more or less of another input here and there.

Didn't figure in LP and electric for drying either. Or trucking to get to town. I did list everything he asked for though.

Crop insurance will depend on the rate you choose to insure at. It could be as low as 30 cents an acre to over $50 an acre. Mine is $22.

Yeah of course you have your rent. And even on owned ground figure you could have gotten that rent from someone else if you didn't farm it. So add another $150 whether its owned ground or rented. Of course thats not a "production" cost per say, but it is there. I rent everything, some from family. So to me the $150 on your owned ground is profit, but has to be accounted for in the sell price.

Have you looked at your state's extension service web site? They list that type of information. www.extension.iastate.edu is the site for Iowa State University's extension service.
