OT cattle question

Have one steer with a growth on his neck. It is directly behind his jaw bone. It is not attached to anything, it is hard, and it feels like it is under the skin. It is the size of a baseball, he is about 400 pounds or so. Should I lance it or let it alone?

Thanks!!

I would consult a large animal vet to get their advice before you do anything drastic on your own. I have seen people make the wrong decisions trying to be their own vet. At least a quick chat with a vet won't cost you much more than a trip to town and a little of your time. Just my 2 cents worth. Best of luck to you.

If it were mine I would stick a neddle in it and see if anything comes out on the ground.you might have to do that several times, if that didn't get rid of it I would lance it. Never hurts to talk with the vet if you have a relationship with one,but you can't have the vet out very often and make much money.

If not attached indicates that moves around with the hide than I would not suspect Lumpy Jaw. Am I correct that lumpy jaw is attached or a growth of the bone.

It sounds like lumpy jaw (actinomycosis). I had a cow with a chronic case of it. The vet came out, tried to drain it with out any success and gave her an IV of silver iodide (the classic treatment) and it went down for about 10 months and came back.

I did some research and found it was caused by a gram negative bacterium and the LA200 worked on gram negative bacteria. I gave her a dose per label two times within a week based on her body weight and the lump went down for about a year but came back again. I told my vet about this and he was surprised at the result I had.

Though she was a good purebred cow, I shipped her. These types of infections are very hard to get rid of.
You can try LA200 and see if it"s effective in your case but I wouldn"t have high hopes for a permanent cure. If the LA 200 works I"d wait till the withhold period is over (30 days?) and then ship the calf.

Usually an abscess in the case of lumpy jaw is going to be directly associated with the mandible. A large mass behind the jaw could stil be an abscess under the skin from trauma, abscess or enlargement of the submandibular lymph node, would be rare to be a cancer because steer is young.

You aren"t going to hurt anything by poking a needle in it. Use a large bore needle such as a 16-18 ga needle to see if pus comes out of it. If pus comes out treat with antibiotic or try a round of antibiotic anyway if you wish.
