Front passenger side wheel bearing growling on work car... always something... argh! 2004 chevy malibu(classic), would I be guessing right, 36mm for the axle nut? Is that standard size for GM? Another one of those instances, buy a tool for once in a lifetime use... Thanks-SHON

I just done a 1991 buick and had to buy a 35mm and a 36mm the 35 to take off and the 36 for the new nut to put it back on!!!!! $19.00 X 2 once in a life time tools dont forget the torks socket bits you'll need a 50 or a 55 $4-8 apiece

Don't forget the hubnut torque also. It sets the preload on the bearing. Torque is pretty high-over 100 ft. lbs. usually on a GM FWD. Don't use an impact for the hubnut or you'll use those sockets again. Hope this helps. Gerard

You can use one at Oreillys too. But both charge you new price for an old socket and then refund it when you bring it back. Unless you want to keep it, of course. They dnn't care. Last one I borrowed was around $20 which was more than enough to make the drive to take it back.

Free rental, rental while they have your money then free when you bring it back. But, twenty is too much for a one time or once in a while use. Also the drive back is at your convienance because they're not renting by hr/day.

If you keep the car long, you'll be using the socket again.. ASK ME HOW I KNOW.

My 05 truck barely made 2 years on the factory "sealed" wheel bearings.

Dad has a 99 Grand Am, 125k or so on it now.. on it's 3rd set..

Dad and I do minor repairs for the neighbors and family, we have changed ALOT of these bearings.

BTW.. you can buy a whole 3/4 drive metric set at Harbor Freight for around 50 bucks.. And shy of the ratchets not being the best, they are holding up well for me.

Can't remember for sure what size they are now though..

Brad
